With the burgeoning application of technology for shale plays in the Oil/Gas industry, there are business implications that need to be addressed in order to take full advantage of that growth.
First: We need to consider just the sheer geology/geography of it all. As we say in our web seminar "Optimize Oil/Gas Lease Ownership in a Shale Play," all shale
is not created equal. The layers within the earth are not constructed in nice easy
straight lines and so we need to account for that in our drilling efforts but also
in our lease provisions and our accounting systems.
Second: Since the formations do take on fairly jagged structures, we need a
different way to look at our lease holdings. It is no longer enough to draw an X and
Y plot on the ground and declare that as the boundaries of our lease—the third
dimension is critical. In that third dimension, we may only own from one depth to
another depth and not necessarily above or below it. And the depth in the
formations varies from one geographical location to another.
Third: The traditional way of handling acreage reporting can result in
overstating or understating what you actually own. You need ways to calculate and
view the acreage associated with various depths and formations so that you can
report accurate information to your investors and key decision-makers.
